My single mother expressed very strong feelings for "Americans" when I was
around 7 years of age. I think she admired the Navy sailors in those days.
Of course, being in the entertainment industry as a singer in a nightclub,
she would inevitably meet many overseas visitors.
At the time I was visiting her
for a couple of weeks at her flat at Bourke Street in Darlinghurst, NSW. I
had travelled by train from the foster home I was being cared for in Armidale of
country NSW.... I lived with the Greek "Sourie" family. [not
sure of spelling]
Mum played the steel-guitar and sang beautiful songs. I never did
get to hear her singing enough. She worked
as a singer in night-clubs around Kings Cross....
She was different..... the times were
different... before the infamous William Street fire... a hotel she knew
well.
Considering the years that have passed, and what I knew of her health, it is likely that for
years my mother has been on a pension or Social Security payment for
some time in Australia.
Then again it is quite possible that she went to the USA to live, years ago.... and may be
on an aged government payment there.... or she may have gone with or met a deserving
person and moved to the USA years ago and has lived a better life with much
more happiness than she was able to find here in Australia.
She may have even changed
her name.
I used to think of my mother as a magical person... some kind of
faery.....
But that aside, I was told by Centrelink to write her and father letters,
which, if they were "on the books", would be forwarded to them and if
they would like to make contact, it was up to them. No other option was
available. I was not surprised.
